THE world-renowned company in obstacle course racing (OCR) Spartan, is putting on a new event weekend at Pioneer Park in Bright, with an open invitation to new racers and seasoned enthusiasts alike.
Held over February 22 and 23, the weekend will host a variety of courses including 5kms, 10kms, 21kms and an endurance event, the Hurricane Heat, a four-hour race.
Children are also welcome to participate with 1km to 3km courses designed just for them.
In addition to the man-made obstacles incorporated throughout the races, Bright will be a perfect setting for the OCR event with courses plotted up hills and rocky terrain, across the Ovens River, through open paddocks and even some sections of forest.
“I fell in love with Bright after I got back from organizing the race in Fiji last year,” Spartan race coordinator, Armando Pianese said.
“I want to reconnect with the community big time and bring the brand back to the area and I really want to have a successful race in Bright, so we get to come back again in 2026.
“It’s just about having fun: sometimes people get dressed up and even when they're up to their knees in mud, or crossing the river, it's just a fun experience for everyone.”
With a background in personal training and soccer coaching, Mr Pianese tells his students racing is very good for mental health, not just physical health.
“We thought only the 'elite' sports enthusiasts would be interested in participating in Spartan races, but good health has become a priority with the majority of people now,” Mr Pianese said.
“Our participants don't crack under pressure when they face adversity and they don’t stop competing.
“It's a big community; all the racers are there to push you up and help you finish because there are no opponents; everyone is a Spartan.
“The best part of the weekend is after the last race, when everyone finishes we celebrate with a festival, which is super fun.”
Mr Pianese said such community events bring huge benefits to the host region.
“We cannot survive without local community support and the volunteers are amazing,” he said.
“We try to find the balance between running the business, making Spartan successful, while also giving everyone a great experience.
“In this way, we’ve been able to work with local sponsors and collaborate with local businesses and council to provide a great experience for all the competitors and supporters.
“This year, one of our sponsors is Bright Brewery,” Mr Pianese said.
“At the finish line, the competitors will receive a beer and a t-shirt and some other goodies.
“This year is the last official year for Bright, we'll then sit down with council to plan future events.”
