Rosie Spicer – Porepunkah

What do you do for a living?

My main passion is working here in Hawthorn Village. I've been here 25 years. I actually retired in June but they're having trouble finding anyone to take on the job, so I came back a couple of days a week.

How long have you been living in the area?

I moved here in 1973. My parents bought Green Hills Caravan Park on Harrietville Road. The year that my father took over was the same year that Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin. We had storms here too that knocked everything out. I've worked at all the local shops around town, I've just about cooked everywhere, cleaned rooms in every motel. In 1998 I was lucky enough to walk into this job. I have enjoyed and loved every single minute that I've been here. I've had some best friends who are 90 plus.

What are your hobbies and interests?

I run and swim. They're probably my biggest hobbies.

What do you like about the area?

It's green, smells great. The hills are beautiful, Mount Buffalo is stunning. When spring comes out you see all the yellow in the hills, and all the colors – the azaleas and rhodies start spouting everywhere and every week there's a different color. It's a great place to live.

Where would you take visitors to showcase the area?

Definitely up Mount Buffalo, it's stunning to see. Along the Ovens River – there are some beautiful walks that have been set up there. And mountain bike riding up here is fantastic.

Is there anything you would change about the area?

Probably cut the holidays shorter – it does get a bit too busy here. Perhaps another road to bypass Bright. The traffic is just too much for the main area. They could probably develop the Back Porepunkah Road and make that a main road out to Harrietville.
