Rolling into Bright for the weekend

LADIES from the national community group Rolling Solo Australia descended upon Bright last weekend for a local getaway experience.

On the itinerary were bike rides, winery tours, sight-seeing, visits to local restaurants and relaxing with other 'rollers' at the caravan park.

Local roller Lesley Bradshaw said that Rolling Solo is open to ladies from all walks of life and more than 40 members from the nation-wide community were visiting Bright.

"The group is exclusively made up of ladies who are either widowed or whose husbands prefer to stay at home to watch the footy while they go camping and socialise," she said.

"Anyone can go on the app and create an event all over Australia and members can drive to the meet-up if they happen to be nearby.

"At our big annual event this year in Port Elliot in South Australia, there were more than 300 members present.

"It's completely optional, not everyone has to do the same thing.

"On Thursday night we had a campfire and gathered around to talk."

"Age is no barrier," said Helga Lewis, stating that she is friends with other rollers in their 80s.

The group also does more than just meet at various locations for a getaway.

Some recalled how members were able to support each other in their time of need.

"A few months ago, one member broke her foot while out in the middle of nowhere and put the call out for help through the app," Ms Bradshaw said.

"Other members showed up as she was being loaded into an ambulance and they took the keys for her campervan.

"They drove the campervan into town where she was in hospital, cleaned inside, washed and ironed all of her clothes and sat and talked to her while she was recovering.

"That's what rollers do."

Elisabeth Mayer said it's just a great group and a great opportunity to meet people.

"I think making connections is the best thing," Lynne Carroll said.

"We all have a common interest which creates a common bond.

"We have learned so much from each other and been so helpful."
