STUDENTS from Foundation to grade four at Saint Mary's Primary School displayed their hard work over the past term to the other year levels and to their parents on the final day of the term three last Friday, September 20.
The Foundation/grade one and two children studied the 'Motion, Light and Sound' (MLS) program; investigating how everyday objects move, make sound and change appearance or create light.
"The children were able to make displays outlining their understanding of these principles using everyday objects," grade one teacher, Jo Bennett said.
"We talked about how fireflies create light, how our eyes take in light and how sunlight and water creates rainbows.
"As we studied sound, the children chose a musical instrument to research, used everyday objects to make sounds and created string phones to listen to each other's voices.
"We also investigated how objects move based on either push or pull interactions; they pulled a car along on a string, practised ten-pin bowling to understand the domino effect and learned how different amounts of force create movement."
Parents arrived mid-afternoon to see their children's displays and to take them out of school early for the last day of term.
"It's a great exhibition," parent, Justin Donaldson said, as he dropped in to see his daughter Freya's work.
"Clearly everyone has worked very hard on their projects.
'My daughter has been so excited about the display for the last week or so."
Parent, Laura Revrenna, also heard about her son's display early.
"Oscar has been talking about the expo at home a lot," she said.
"He has done great work and I've enjoyed coming down to see it."
Students in grades three and four participated in the 'Learning Experiences Through Investigation' (LETI) program and read either of two books throughout the term, later using these books as inspiration to craft their end-of-term projects.
"The grade three robots were based on the novel 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes and the grade four students recreated the rustic cabin: 'the Humpy' from their book 'Storm Boy' by Colin Thiele," grade three teacher, April Nannipieri said.
"The focus for this term for the grade three and four students was to learn design and technology.
"We also tasked them with finding a way to integrate something about their family.
"Some students have made posters or booklets to pair with their projects."
Grade four student, Thomas, explained he and his classmates were very happy with their exhibition.
"I've made my Humpy recreation out of bark and cardboard," he said.
"We've been working on making 'Humpy's' the whole term," fellow classmate, Patty said.
"Today is the last day of school term, so it's exhibition day!"
A select number of grade five and six students helped support the exhibitions by supervising and assisting the younger children to display their work.
"I was excited to see the grade three and four exhibitions," grade 5/6 student Quinn said.
"They have been working on it for weeks."
