ONE could not have imagined that a challenge match between two small towns in the late 1880s would expand and envelope many settlements, attracting the allegiance of dedicated crowds each week.

Initially the players, numbering 20 on the field at a time, wore lace–up vests, leggings and then a variety of attire in club colours...
