MYRTLEFORD and District Landcare and Sustainability (MDLS) Incorporated has released a draft 'Strategic Plan for Myrtleford’s Riverine Area' and is seeking further public comment over the next three weeks.

MDLS, which is a volunteer environmental organisation dedicated to the improvement of Myrtleford and its adjoining public spaces, said the plan covers crown land under the collaborative care and management of the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), the North East Catchment Management Authority (NECMA) and Alpine Shire Council.

The initiation of the plan involved a team from Conservation Collaborators working with MDLS to identify nine sites within this area, which were mapped and then used in initial discussions with the community, government agencies and Traditional Custodians.

The plan was then developed by incorporating the information collected from these early discussions and from comments, ideas and aspirations gathered from the community at the Myrtleford Market on April 27, and a community information session on June 5 this year.

A MDLS spokesperson said all relevant Traditional Owner groups and organisations were also contacted and their knowledge and opinions have been incorporated.

The vision described in the plan is for a natural environment along the Ovens River, Barwidgee Creek, and Happy Valley Creek that supports biodiversity through enhancement of riverine habitats, including threatened plant species and wildlife, as well as the enhancement of recreational activities to foster the health and wellbeing of the community and travellers to the area.

MDLS is now accepting final submissions, comments and ideas on the draft plan over the next three weeks before the plan is finalised in mid-October this year.
