Construction begins on Myrtleford Landfill Capping project

CONSTRUCTION of the Myrtleford Landfill Capping Earthworks at the Myrtleford Transfer Station began this week, with works expected to be completed by the end of June 2025, weather permitting.

Alpine Shire Council said the total project, costing almost $2.3 million, is an important step in protecting the environment and ensuring the landfill meets Environment Protection Authority regulations.

The design of the landfill cap began in October 2020 and the EPA approved the final design in August 2023, with council last December awarding Extons Pty Ltd the contract for the lump sum of $2,224,670 to carry out works.

At the December meeting councillors were told capping the old landfill sites seeks to reduce all emissions - including methane gas - and eliminate water entering the cells to assist the aerobic digestion process.

The landfill previously accepted domestic waste in Cell 1 and Cell 2, and council said capping these areas is a key milestone in meeting environmental compliance.

From next Monday, 24 February while construction is underway, all waste will still be accepted, but waste drop-off locations may have changed.

Visitors should follow signage and check with staff at the transfer station to confirm the correct drop-off points.

There will also be changes to traffic movement around the site.
