Alpine region rattled

STORMS cut power to hundreds of households in Myrtleford and district and caused damage between Wangaratta to Tawonga as they swept across the region on Sunday evening.

According to SES Victoria, residents in the North East called in 45 requests for assistance.

After heavy rainfall and lightning flashes that started at approximately 7.15pm, SES crews responded to multiple incidents including 34 trees down on roads or property, eight cases of building damage and three flood events.

Wangaratta bore the brunt of the storm with 21 requests for assistance, while Myrtleford had 10 requests and Bright and Mitta Mitta had two each.

In Bright, three trees fell down along the Great Alpine Road and one along Tawonga Gap Road which were attended to by local SES volunteers.

"Two of our SES crews were called to 10 different requests for assistance on Sunday night," Myrtleford SES member, David Coates said.

"The following morning, new reports continued to come in, with three calls coming from the Whorouly and Bowmans Forest area.

"Thankfully there were no injuries or severe property damage from the recent storms."

Blackouts also occurred throughout Sunday evening, affecting residents from Markwood to Ovens.

Local residents reported that the loss of power and disruption to devices was a reminder to all to be prepared for any emergency.

"A tree brought down a high voltage conductor in the region on Sunday night," an AusNet spokesperson said.

"We had a crew making repairs and a helicopter patrolling the rest of the feeder the following morning."

By Monday afternoon, AusNet patrols were completed and approximately 900 residents in the Myrtleford area who had been without power had supply restored at some point between 5pm and 6pm.
