National action needed

AUSTRALIA needs a new emergency warning system, the Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements found as it warned about “more frequent and intense” natural disasters.
The final 1000-page report was handed down on Friday and detailed 80 recommendations on the coordination of all levels of government during emergencies, public warning systems, firefighting resources, climate data and the role of the Australian Defence Force.
The inquiry was called in the wake of the 2019/20 bushfire season - which locally burned more than 105,000 hectares - but commissioners were also tasked with working out how to prevent the severity of all natural disasters.
