MYRTLEFORD itself may have so far escaped any physical impacts from the fires ravaging parts of Abbeyard and Mount Buffalo, but the smoke and fear of imminent danger is already taking its toll economically.

Alpine Shire Council has estimated the total economic loss for the month of January across the shire to be $90 million due to the bushfires.

Many businesses reopened on Monday for the first time since last weekend’s horrid smoke smothering and emergency warnings.
