MOUNTAIN TRASH TEAM: Robyn Downey, Rolf Schonfeld, Stephen Mather and Anthea Mather were four volunteers doing a job they’d rather not have to do: picking up other people’s discarded litter.

A GROUP of rubbish-clearing volunteers has returned to the Great Alpine Road up Mount Hotham, and in two days picked up 500 pieces of rubbish – 95 per cent of it recyclable.

Led by Smoko man Rolf Schonfeld, the ‘Mountain Trash Team’ returned to the mountain road, where less than four months prior had scoured the roadside collecting litter from Harrietville to the Hotham Resort Management boundary.

Over four days in early July, Mr Schonfeld and his team picked up more than 2200 pieces of litter, all thrown from cars or dumped at pull-over spots.
