Jail for fatal crash

Police warning after high country road accidents

THE man who killed his passenger in a Bright crash after a night of heavy drinking already had a long history of driving offences, a court has heard.

John Cole, 35, of Delany Avenue, was sentenced to five years’ jail in the Wangaratta County Court on Monday, after pleading guilty to dangerous driving causing death and failing to render assistance at an accident.

Judge Peter Wischusen ordered Cole serve a minimum of three and a half years before parole, and suspended his driver’s licence for four years.

Jarrah Spafford-Spaan, 26, died instantly when Cole lost control of a Holden Commodore while driving at least 92 kilometres per hour in an 80km/h zone on Churchill Avenue at 12.45am on April 26.

Crown prosecutor, Jim Bessell, said the car skidded off the road around a right-hand bend and crashed into a wooden power pole.

“The deceased took the brunt of the impact and was likely to have died shortly after,” he said.
