Saints’ tough task

Myrtleford opener Geof Sundstrom looks on in dismay as Wangaratta Magpies players celebrate his dismissal for a duck.

MYRTLEFORD faces a tough task to avoid a second straight loss in Wangaratta and District cricket after their opponents the Wangaratta Magpies finished day one of their round six matchup well in control.

After electing to bat first the Saints could only muster a total of 147 after being dismissed inside of 52 overs before the Magpies finished the day at 2/93.

Early wickets were again the Saints’ downfall slumping to 6/49 before Brad Piazza (53 not out) and Nelum Kumara (30) helped them avoid total disaster.

Zac Guifoyle (5/36) did the damage for the Magpies dismissing Saints openers Geoff Sundstrom and Steve Marotta within the first three overs of the day before claiming a further three wickets.

The Saints found themselves at 7/77 when Piazza and Kumara teamed up.

The pair added 60 valuable runs but when Kumara fell it wasn’t long before the Saints’ innings came to a close, losing the last two wickets for just four runs.
