Vonarx to lead Alpine

AT THE HELM: Newly elected Alpine Shire Council mayor Jan Vonarx is hoping her time in the chair will keep council heading in the right direction.

IT was a tight vote, but Alpine Shire councillor Jan Vonarx pipped opponent and fellow councillor Tony Keeble to the post, during the mayoral election last week.

Cr Vonarx was announced as mayor, after securing four of the seven votes during council’s November ordinary council meeting.

Alpine Shire Council chief executive officer Dave Barry called for nominations and a seconder for the office of mayor and Cr Daryl Pearce threw Cr Keeble’s hat into the ring, which was seconded by outgoing mayor Peter Roper.

Cr Ron Janas nominated Cr Vonarx, and was backed by Cr Kate Farrell.

Three out of seven councillors put their hands up for Cr Keeble at voting time, including Cr Pearce, Cr Roper and Cr Keeble.

Cr Vonarx voted in favor of herself and was backed by councillors Janas, Farrell and Forsyth, which secured her positon as mayor for a one year term.
