A MAN made history at Falls Creek last weekend when he became the first Australian to swim an Ice Mile.

38-year-old Wyatt Song planned his swim over one mile at Rocky Valley Lake, Falls Creek, after he successfully swam the English Channel in 2012.

Song, who completed the 1.67km swim in 42:30, said he wanted to create another personal challenge and found it difficult to come up with something harder than swimming the English Channel, and after a year of training he can’t believe he’s finally done it.

“It’s really still quite surreal, it feels like a dream come true and it’s something I’ve been trying to do for a long time,” he said.

“I have been all over the world training for this Ice Mile and now I’ve finally accomplished it.

The Ice Mile is a swimming endurance challenge which must be completed solo and unassisted, in water below five degrees without a wetsuit.

Song said he had been training for over a year and the journey had been an emotional rollercoaster.
