30 years in the saddle exploring high country

AT HOME ON HORSEBACK: Lin and Clay Baird are carrying on the family tradition.

ON the first Tuesday in November 1986, At Talaq won the Melbourne Cup and it was also the same week Kath and Steve Baird embarked on a journey in adventure tourism with their first commercial pack horse adventure into the Victorian High Country.

This Melbourne Cup Day Mt Beauty’s Bogong Horseback Adventures will mark 30 years.

The business is now the domain of their two boys Lin and Clay, who as toddlers also made the shift from Gippsland to the high country.

Lin Baird said it was a move incubated over a long time.

“Steve’s family had a long tradition in the North East mountains of Victoria as gold miners and strong childhood memories of the High Country had always beckoned,” he said.

“There was also a rich catalogue of cultural heritage from the indigenous moth hunters, traditional owners of this country to the coming of the gold seekers and cattlemen of more recent times.
