Ski holiday rush is on

LAST week’s snow storms have delivered a near-perfect start to the school holiday peak season at Falls Creek and Mt Hotham.

Natural snowfalls have averaged out at about 50cm at both resorts but mountain veterans say it looks closer to a metre.

The cold snap has also been ideal for snowmaking.

On Sunday night Mt Hotham’s recently upgraded system churned out 18,500 cubic metres of snow, close to 2000 truckloads.

The resort added Heavenly Valley to a raft of lifts open on Monday and a far cry from the start to last year’s winter.

Falls Creek too has a raft of lifts open, while Dinner Plain’s snow park was also opened on the weekend.
