PHILIPPA Cartwright remembers her first day as a teacher.
The then Ms Dent was escorted to the door in early 1968 – inside were 32 grade 3 students at a Myrtleford Primary School bursting at the seams.
In the cupboard was a box of chalk and a 10-year-old textbook.
When it rained the water from the leaking roof washed the blackboard clean.
There was no heating and no electricity and on an overcast winter’s day the students could barely see to read or write.
On Sunday Mrs Cartwright was recognised for 45 years of service to education, all at the now Myrtleford P12 College.
