A park by any other name

BEAUTIFUL, BUT WHAT’S IT CALLED? The Upper Kiewa Valley Community Association is seeking an appropriate name for this peaceful reserve near the Mt Beauty CBD.

VARIOUSLY called Fountain Park, Swimming Pool Park and That Park Opposite the Post Office, this peaceful reserve has never had its own name, and the Upper Kiewa Valley Community Association would like to propose a suitable name that reflects the town and community.

Alpine Council’s sustainable development director Heather Green said the shire was always delighted when a name is proposed for a feature in the community.

“Of course we have to check that it complies with the State Government geographic place naming regulations,” she said.

“For instance if something is to be named after a person it must not be a living person, and there should not be duplication of names in the one locality.

“There is a series of checklists.”

The state government also promotes, but does not insist on, indigenous names, and last year encouraged naming places with an Anzac theme.
