Mayoral race begins

RON Janas has emerged as the favourite to be Alpine Shire’s next mayor.

The deputy mayor believes he will be nominated and seconded by councillor colleagues for the top job next Tuesday night to replace Jan Vonarx – who confirmed this week that she would not seek re-election.

Cr Janas said the time was right.

“I haven’t put my hand up for mayor in the first three years on council – I believe that you need time to fully understand the role and establish a solid relationship with council management and staff,” the former Myrtleford policeman and first term councillor said.

“But this time around I will raise my hand for the top job and we’ll see how it plays out from there.

“We need to trust the staff, we can’t micromanage the council operations but we can set the agenda for the long-term, think strategically about where we want to be and how we are going to get to there.”
