Premier’s top gong for tireless humanitarian

COMMUNITY ADVOCATE: Peter Hopper with his Victoria Senior of the Year award at his home in Bright.

PETER Hopper has worked with immigrants, the indigenous and played a key role in pushing for better health services in the Ovens Valley.

But nothing prepared the Bright humanitarian for the honour bestowed upon him at Victoria’s Government House on Thursday.

Mr Hopper knew he was to be recognised for his tireless work but even he was shocked when he was the last man standing before he was announced as the recipient of the major gong – the Premier’s Senior of the Year.

The awards recognise and celebrate the contributions of outstanding Victorians with Mr Hopper receiving the top honour due to his tireless efforts advocating for older people of Bright and the Alpine Shire and assisting those marginalised due to their ethnicity or cultural background.

Mr Hopper said he was very humbled to be awarded such an honour.

“I was very surprised,” he said.
