School rises from the ashes

SHARED LEARNING: Grade 2 students Thomas Morgan, Gus Benson and Maddison Pasqualotto enjoyed their first day in the new classroom of St Mary’s Primary School. The rebuild of part of the school which was damaged by fire in 2013 was completed just prior to the mid-year holidays after five months of work.

ST MARY’S Primary School students and teachers have finally moved into their new learning space after the building was completed just prior to the mid-year break.

Construction on the rebuild of the building damaged by fire in October 2013 got under way at the start of the school year and although it took a little longer than expected to finish, St Mary’s principal Ashley Marsh said it was well worth the wait.

Mr Marsh said the building will initially be home to the prep class and one of the grade one-two classes but will be utilised by all of the junior students during a normal week.

The new building is an open learning space which encourages group learning and joint activities and includes separate areas for moving, reading, building, creating, talking and presenting.
