Savoys show spirit

SOLID PERFORMANCE: Arron Redman looks to take on an Albury United defender during the Savoys’ opening round match, while (inset) Nathan Mirt celebrates the equaliser with goal scorer Dan Kelly.

MYRTLEFORD has come from a goal down with only 10 men to secure a draw with Albury United in their opening round clash of the Albury Wodonga Football Association season on Sunday.

After falling behind in the opening 20 minutes, the Savoys’ task of taking any points away from the match was made even harder when new recruit Steve Illic was shown a straight red for an alleged trip of a United opponent.

Illic’s dismissal on the half hour mark caused tempers to boil over between the two sides but it was the Savoys who would have the last laugh as the new English pairing of Arron Redman and Dan Kelly combined to equalise and give them a well deserved point.

Having fought out the remaining 15 minutes of the first half after the sending off, the Savoys came out a different team in the second half.

Despite United’s advantage showing early on in the second when they almost doubled their advantage, the Savoys were the better of the two sides.

And just after the hour mark the home side drew level after Redman’s cross from the left side found Kelly, who rose up to head home and open his account for the club.
