Council to lose annual guarantee of $1 million for roads, bridges

ALPINE Shire Council appears to have lost a State Government funding guarantee worth $1 million a year to help maintain local roads and bridges.

A spokesperson for Victorian Roads Minister Luke Donnellan has confirmed the Country Roads and Bridges program will cease on June 30 this year.

The program was introduced in 2011 by the Liberal Nationals Coalition Government and guaranteed Alpine Shire Council, along with 39 other regional councils, $1 million each, annually over four years, for local roads and bridges.

Mr Donnellan’s office rejected claims the Andrews Labor Government had axed the program, saying its current funding ends on June 30 and “the former government did not renew this funding”.

But local Nationals member Tim McCurdy (MLA, Ovens Valley) said the program was in fact guaranteed to continue as the Liberal National Coalition Government committed to the funding for another four years as part of its election campaign.

“To see that guaranteed funding disappear is incredibly disappointing,” Mr McCurdy said this week.
