COOKING UP SUCCESS: Sole é Luna’s Frank Martinez is extremely proud of first year apprentice Owen Burrows.

LOCAL first year apprentice chef has taken out the gold medal in the Goulburn Ovens Institute of Tafe’s cooking final.

Sole é Luna’s Owen Burrows competed against other first year apprentices in the region last month, and he said he was completely stunned when he found out he had won the gold medal.

“I was really surprised that I won, I went down to the competition because I wanted to see how well I would do and hoped I might get something but I certainly didn’t expect to walk away top of the class,” he said.

“We had to cook the same entrée twice and the same main twice so the judges could see how consistent we were.”

Owen began working as a kitchen hand at Sole é Luna in 2012 and after one year, decided to make the most of it and signed up to be an apprentice chef.

“I was really enjoying working here at Sole é Luna in the kitchen and Frank offered me an apprenticeship position which I jumped at,” he said.
